KAUST Revolutionizes Athletic Systems with Wearable Sensors

The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) has developed advanced wearable sensors that will make a difference in athletic regimens and injury prevention, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The new sensors align with Saudi Vision 2030 to achieve high performances and global excellence in professional sports.

KAUST is leveraging advanced electrochemical sensors to monitor drivers’ vital responses to boost their safety by providing detailed insights into hydration, electrolyte balance and other stress markers. Consequently, this enables specialized therapeutic interventions and better performance.

“All this information could be very useful for them to actually start predicting whether some of the racers will be doing a good job, maybe changing the driver order, et cetera. This cooperative problem-solving project soon will begin field testing, with commercial production of tailored wearable devices potentially within a couple of years,” KAUST Professor Khaled Nabil Salama said.

Dr. Nazek El-Atab, the principal researcher at KAUST’s Smart Memory Devices and Advanced Applications (SAMA) lab, explained that the wearable technology is combined with intelligent data storage and versatile computing systems.

Therefore, they can continuously monitor physiological parameters during training and competition, which helps coaches predict and prevent injuries, optimize training regimens, and even create personalized nutrition plans.

“Our research into smart memory and multifunctional devices has the potential to revolutionize athlete training and health monitoring. Imagine devices that not only track performance metrics but also analyze them in real time, providing immediate feedback to coaches and athletes,” El-Atab added.
