Saudi Arabia’s Taekwondo athlete, Donia Abu Taleb, has inaugurated a new era for female sports and Olympic participation in the Kingdom.
Donia Abu Taleb has achieved remarkable milestones during her participation in the Paris Olympic Games 2024.
Olympic Achievements
The 27-year-old athlete succeeded in securing her spot in the quarterfinals of the Women’s taekwondo -49kg category after beating the Israeli Abishag Semberg 2-1 in the round of 16 on Wednesday, after a historic performance.

Although Abu Taleb didn’t make it to the semifinals, after losing to the Thai Panipak Wongpattanakit 2-0, the Saudi athlete still has a chance to clinch a bronze medal, another addition to her impressive record.
Donia Abu Taleb has made history as the first Saudi female athlete to qualify for the Olympics. She shined with an outstanding performance that led her to the quarterfinals.
Inspiring Journey
Abu Taleb’s journey is an inspiration for Saudi youth who seek to achieve their dreams. Born and raised in Jeddah, Abu Taleb started her taekwondo path at the age of 8 by training in a boys’ club. Due to the lack of female competitors, she faced off with male counterparts.
Supported by her family and coach, Donia Abu Taleb was able to hone her skills and abilities. In 2015, she joined the Saudi Taekwondo Federation to start an inspiring success story that has carved her name in the history of Saudi sports, as well as regional and international sports.
Remarkable Milestones
Before qualifying to the Paris Olympics 2024, Donia Abu Taleb has made great accomplishments. In November 2022, she became the first Saudi female taekwondoin to win a medal at the World Championships, by claiming bronze in the -49kg category.
In June 2022, she won a bronze medal at the Asian Championships in the -53kg category, to become the first female taekwondoin representing Saudi Arabia in the competition.
Furthermore, Donia Abu Taleb was the Flag-bearer for the Olympic Games Opening Ceremony in 2024. She was also the Saudi Olympic Committee Female Athlete of the Year 2022.
Women Empowerment
Donia Abu Taleb’s triumph in the Asian Championships paved the way for opening clubs for girls to participate in taekwondo, another milestone in Saudi women empowerment efforts.
Under Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia has pursued reforms to empower women by promoting their rights and encouraging their participation in various fields.
As a result, Saudi women now have the right to drive, their participation in the labor force has significantly increased, and they have become involved in many sports.
