ICJ Ruling: Israel’s Occupation of Palestinian Territory is ‘Unlawful’

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled today, Friday, that Israel’s presence in the occupied Palestinian Territories is illegal and accordingly called on the Israeli Occupation to stop building settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, reported UN News.

The ICJ stated that Israel is under an obligation to bring to an end its unlawful presence “as rapidly as possible”.

Furthermore, Israel is obligated to halt all its settlement activities and “evacuate all settlers from the Occupied Palestinian Territory.”

It declared that all states should never support or legalize the situation arising from the unlawful presence” of Israel.

Moreover, they are obliged not to “render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation created by the continued presence of the State of Israel” in Palestine.

Israel’s Response

Israel’s Foreign Ministry Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the ICJ’s opinion, describing it as “fundamentally wrong” and “blatantly one-sided”.

Netanyahu stated that ICJ’s opinion cannot alter the “legality of Israeli settlement in all the territories of our homeland”.

Israel also repeated its firm instance that “direct negotiations” are the only way to reach a political settlement.

ICJ Opinion

The ICJ was issuing a non-binding opinion on the legality of Israel’s 57-year occupation of lands sought for a Palestinian state, and the ruling is likely to have more effect on international opinion than it will on Israeli policies.

The ICJ opinion on the legality of Israel’s 57-year occupation of lands is non-binding.

However, the ruling is likely to have more effect on international opinion than it will on Israeli policies.
