Fifty-three member states of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) have unanimously approved the Riyadh Charter for Artificial Intelligence in the Islamic World.
The charter was officially announced during the Global AI Summit, organized by the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) in Riyadh in September 2024. It marks a significant milestone in establishing a unified ethical and strategic framework for AI development across Islamic nations.
During the 45th session of the ICESCO Executive Council, held in Tunisia, representatives from all member states, along with SDAIA officials, approved the charter. The session focused on its role as a comprehensive strategic framework aimed at aligning AI technologies with Islamic values, promoting sustainable development, and fostering international collaboration in the field.
ICESCO member states reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening AI governance and ensuring the responsible adoption of AI technologies within the Islamic world.
Dr. Kais Hammami, Director of the ICESCO Center for Foresight and Artificial Intelligence, presented the charter during the session. Finally, he highlighted its key pillars and strategic objectives, emphasizing its role in guiding AI development to benefit all Islamic nations.
