Flooding, Flight Disruptions: Heavy Rain, Thunderstorms Hit UAE

Emirati airports cancelled or delayed dozens of flights due to the heavy rainstorm that hit the UAE on Friday and flooded the roads in major cities, according to AFP.

Emirates airline cancelled 13 flights on Friday, while Sharjah Airport also delayed and cancelled flights after heavy overnight rain swept across the area.

“Some flights… are cancelled or delayed due to adverse weather,” a Dubai Airports spokesperson said.

The rain flooded Sharjah’s main street early on Friday, prompting residents to wade through floodwaters barefoot.

As the rainstorm approached on Thursday, Dubai Police urged residents to remain indoors unless travel was “absolutely necessary,” and avoid flood-prone areas.

Meanwhile, the National Center of Meteorology had issued warnings for rainfall across the country from Thursday to Friday, including in Dubai and the capital Abu Dhabi.

The authorities also advised motorcycle delivery riders to halt operations during the unstable weather, cautioning that wet roads significantly increase the risk of skidding and extend stopping distances.

In its daily weather bulletin, the center anticipated moderate to fresh winds on Saturday, occasionally intensifying with cloud activity and stirring up dust and sand.
