Asma Assad Faces Leukemia Battle with 50/50 Survival Odds: Report
Asma Assad, the British-born wife of ousted Syrian President Bashar Assad, is battling leukemia and has been given a 50/50 chance of survival by her doctors, according to a report by the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday.
Currently in isolation to minimize the risk of infection, Asma is receiving care in Moscow, where her family sought asylum earlier this month. Her father, Fawaz Akhras, a London-based cardiologist, is by her side and described as “heartbroken” by sources close to the Assad family.
The Syrian presidency announced in May that Asma had been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. This comes after her earlier victory over breast cancer, which she declared herself “completely” free from in 2019.
The 49-year-old reportedly traveled to Moscow for treatment before her husband’s relocation was arranged by the Kremlin following his flight from Syria.
Recent reports have surfaced suggesting tension in the Assad family, with claims that Asma was unhappy in Moscow and seeking a divorce. However, the family has not addressed these rumors, and the Kremlin has officially denied them.
The Daily Telegraph cites Turkish journalists, who were briefed by Russian diplomats, as the likely source of these reports. A source familiar with the Assad family disclosed to the newspaper that “Asma is dying,” and noted her strict isolation, adding: “She can’t be in the same room with anyone (because of her condition).”
Fawaz Akhras has been providing dedicated care to his daughter for nearly six months, first in the UAE and now in Moscow.
