Saudi, Egyptian FMs Discuss Developments in Syria, Gaza

The Foreign Ministers of Saudi Arabia and Egypt discussed the recent developments in both Syria and Gaza, according to a statement from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

On Monday, December 23, 2024, the Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, held a phone call with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, Badr Abdelatty. During the call, both ministers discussed the situation in Syria against the backdrop of the recent developments on the political and military levels.

In the light of this, Abdelatty emphasized the importance of supporting the Syrian State during this critical juncture in Syria’s history. He also stressed the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, while empowering its national institutions to restore stability.

Furthermore, Abdelatty underscored the need to adopt an inclusive Syrian-led political process to restore stability across all Syria.

During the call, both Foreign Ministers discussed the latest developments in the Gaza Strip. The Egyptian Foreign Minister outlined Egypt’s intense efforts with all parties to reach an immediate and permanent ceasefire and ensure the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Separately, the leader of Syria’s new administration, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, said that Syria will not be a threat to any Arab country. In an interview with Asharq Al-Awsat, he said that “the Syrian revolution ended with the fall of the regime, and we will not allow it to spread elsewhere.”

Furthermore, Al-Sharaa stressed that Syria “will not be used to attack or destabilize any Arab or Gulf country.” He also expressed admiration of the Arab Gulf countries’ rapid development. “We admire the development in Gulf countries, particularly Saudi Arabia’s bold plans and vision, and we aspire to achieve similar progress for Syria,” he said.
