Al-Ahsa in Eastern Saudi Arabia Celebrates Historic Qaisariyah Market
History has many facets, told through stories and tales, events and stances. What humans establish becomes a lasting heritage, unchanging in its essence. From this perspective, Al-Ahsa in Eastern Saudi Arabia celebrates the historic Qaisariyah Market. This market is an iconic heritage symbol dating back to past centuries.
The Qaisariyah Market is mentioned in travelers’ memoirs and some historical documents, indicating its existence in the 19th century. It was the largest market in the Arabian Gulf region at the time. Still it remains a commercial center despite urban growth around it and the emergence of modern markets.
The Layali Al-Qaisariyah festival, inaugurated by the Governor of Al-Ahsa, is a winter celebration lasting for two months. It features various folk art performances, famous Al-Ahsa handicrafts, as well as informative exhibitions and cultural and social programs.
Al-Ahsa Secretariat, Al-Ahsa Governorate, and the Al-Ahsa Development Authority organize the event.
The governer emphasized the rich history of the Qaisariyah Market. It encompasses the grandeur of the past and the authenticity of architectural heritage, along with its economic, commercial, and social significance.
Moreover, in a related context, the Secretary of Al-Ahsa, Esam AlMulla, explained to ‘Al-Arabiya.net’ that Al-Ahsa is a global heritage site and a member of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network in the field of crafts and folk art. This underscores our interest in reviving the rich heritage of Al-Ahsa, contributing to tourist attraction, and preserving heritage and folk arts.
He also confirmed that the festival extends to the 20th of the holy month of Ramadan, aiming to create a significant heritage, cultural, and social aspect.
