Saudi General Authority for Irrigation Uses Sustainable Irrigation Systems
The General Authority for Irrigation adopts sustainable practices to improve agriculture and preserve natural resources, by utilizing advanced agricultural methods and modern irrigation systems, reported Akhbaar24.
A source from the authority told ‘Akhbaar 24’ that the Authority has various irrigation systems, including vertical farming, aquaponics, and horizontal hydroponics. The source pointed out that these systems contribute to sustainability as water is reused and utilized in the most optimal and efficient manner.
He added that there are 5 model farms managed by the Authority. Some of these farms use the aquaponics system that utilizes fish farming water for irrigating crops, with water recycling within the system. This system produces a large amount of fish and plants in a smaller space.
He explained that this sustainable agricultural model enhances the quality of crops and improves the productivity of irrigation water, leafy vegetables, and fish. Moreover, it preserves environmental resources and achieves a noticeable increase in the productivity per unit area. It saves more than 90% of irrigation water compared to traditional farming, with a complete commitment to avoiding the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
Example of Model Farm’s Success
A Model Farm in Al-Ahsa, belonging to the Authority, has achieved a certified organic production certificate (HY30006/SA) for leafy crops. This confirms its commitment to organic farming to guarantee the quality and safety of products, relying on the aquaponics system.
In an unprecedented move, Saudi Arabia has embarked on a transformative journey to revolutionize its agricultural sector. The recent agreement between the Associations Support Fund and the Sekaya Charitable Foundation “aims to enhance joint cooperation in water irrigation projects in the Kingdom” as reported by Saudi Press Agency (SPA)
This initiative is part of Saudi’s Vision 2030, that aims to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of water resources.
Harnessing Innovative Technologies for Efficient Irrigation
The heart of Saudi water irrigation projects lies in adopting cutting-edge technologies. In addition, advanced irrigation systems, such as drip and sprinkler irrigation, are set to replace traditional methods. This ensures water reaches the roots of crops with minimal waste. This technology-driven approach conserves water and also optimizes crop yields. It also paves the way for a more sustainable agricultural future in KSA.
Collaborative Efforts: Public-Private Partnerships
Conversely, a key component of these projects is the collaboration between the Saudi government and private sector entities. This partnership aims to pool resources, and expertise. The involvement of international experts specializing in water management further underscores the global dimension of this ambitious project.
Impact on Food Security and Economic Diversification
Moreover, by enhancing water management and irrigation efficiency, Saudi aims to bolster its food security. This initiative expects to increase the Kingdom’s self-reliance in food production. Besides, the project aligns with Saudi’s broader economic diversification efforts.
Setting a Precedent for Arid Regions
Furthermore, Saudi’s commitment to developing advanced water irrigation projects sets a precedent for other arid and semi-arid regions. As the Kingdom progresses on this path, it secures its agricultural future and also showcases a model for sustainable water and land management in challenging environments.
