Oman witnessed a rare flare of violence today with four people killed and several others injured in a shooting near a mosque in Oman’s capital Muscat, reported BBC.

The incident took place near a mosque in the Al-Wadi Al-Kabir neighborhood in the east of the city, according to the Royal Oman Police post on X.

“All security measures have been put in place to deal with the situation, and procedures for collecting evidence are being completed as part of the investigation,” the police statement said.

The police did not provide any further details stating that the investigation is still underway.

As a response to the incident, the U.S. Embassy in Oman issued a warning for Americans to “stay away from the area.”

The Embassy stated that all visa appointments would be cancelled for the day.

Such violent incidents are so rare in the Sultanate.

The homicide rate is so low with 0.7 per 100,000 people in 2010, 2015 and 2019, in comparison with other countries such as the US that recorded 5.8 per 100,000 in 2019.
