Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli has signed a contract worth more than SR175 million ($46.6 million), to establish a prestigious veterinary laboratory in Riyadh, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The laboratory will develop local vaccines for local disease strains.
The laboratory will conduct applied research and studies that serve the field of animal wealth and health in the Kingdom.
Furthermore, it will become a regional reference laboratory for the Middle East region due to its high quality and comprehensive services.
The newly established laboratory has set the following goals:
- Controlling the spread of animal diseases
- Conducting specialized laboratory tests on most types of diseases
- Detecting the causes of diseases
- Determining the sequence of their DNA bases
- Conducting research to develop new vaccines specific to the Kingdom from local microbial strains
- Increasing the production of various local vaccines
- Committing to the application of good laboratory practices within the requirements of the quality system.
- Localizing the veterinary vaccine industry
The contract stands as a testament to the Ministry’s dedication to developing and preserving livestock by overcoming several epidemic diseases that threaten animals and human health.
The ministry also supports veterinary laboratories and provides them with highly qualified specialists and advanced and highly accurate devices to conduct accurate applied research and studies.
Moreover, the labs focused on evaluating locally produced and imported vaccines and analyzing samples for field investigation surveys and applied research on livestock diseases.
