Syria’s Al-Sharaa Pushes for Full Sanctions Relief in Phone Call with Trump
Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa and US President Donald Trump discussed multiple ways to support Syria’s economy and reviewed the latest regional developments during a phone call on Sunday, according to Arab News.
The Syrian presidency stated that Al-Sharaa stressed during the call that lifting the remaining US sanctions on Syria is fundamental for reviving the country’s economy and maintaining a more attractive environment for investment.
Despite the fact that Washington has dismantled much of its sanctions framework on Syria and repealed the Caesar Act, the US still holds certain sanctions on Syria.
The Caesar Act had imposed broad restrictions on individuals, companies and institutions associated with former Syrian President Bashar Assad.
Moreover, Washington has said that sanctions will remain in place against Assad and his associates, as well as individuals accused of human rights violations, involvement in the trafficking of the addictive stimulant captagon, and other actors accused of undermining regional stability.
At the same time, the US is reassessing Syria’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism, a classification that imposes restrictions on US foreign assistance, defense exports, and an array of financial transactions.
Easing the remaining sanctions represents a pivotal step to the success of Syria’s new government and its economic revival efforts.
Currently, several Saudi companies are moving to invest billions of dollars in Syria as part of Riyadh’s support for Syria’s reconstruction and development, while other Gulf states have also pledged financial assistance.
