EU Lifts Sanctions on Key Syrian Ministries

The European Union on Monday lifted sanctions on seven Syrian state institutions, including the ministries of defense and interior, marking a significant milestone toward easing restrictions on Damascus, according to Arab News.

Labeling the move as a step toward deeper diplomatic involvement, the European Council said the decision would “support the strengthening of the EU’s engagement with Syria.”

Furthermore, the council unveiled the extension of sanctions imposed on individuals and entities associated with former Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, prolonging the measures through June 2027.

In 2025, the EU lifted all sanction against Syria after the fall of Al-Assad in December 2024, while maintaining restrictions tied to the former regime of Al-Assad alongside measures grounded in security concerns.

Syria’s Foreign Ministry welcomed the EU’s decision, noting that it would significantly support recovery and reconstruction efforts while boosting the capacity of state institutions to carry out their responsibilities, deliver services to citizens, and foster security and stability.

Crucially, the European Union said the adjustments to its financial restrictions on Syria followed a comprehensive annual review of the sanctions’ framework.

The bloc also underscored that sanctions targeting individuals and entities tied to the former regime of Al-Assad would remain in force due to some concerns that networks affiliated with the ousted leadership continue to have influence and could hinder the political transition or obstruct efforts toward national reconciliation and accountability.

The EU last week approved the restoration of a trade cooperation agreement with Syria, marking another sign of warming relations with Europe.
