Saudi students made history at the international Olympiads marking significant milestone in the Kingdom’s scientific research and innovation sector.
Leaders MENA offers a list of the most significant Olympiads in which the Kingdom participated throughout 2024.
World Robot Olympiad in Turkey
Saudi Arabia’s students have recently secured the first place among Arab countries and ninth globally at the World Robot Olympiad International Final.
Held in Izmir, Turkey from Nov. 26 to 30, the competition represented the debut of the Future Engineers category, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
With several participants of all ages from more than 90 countries, the competition concentrated on creativity in robotics and artificial intelligence.
In addition, the contest included various categories such as Robo Missions, Robo Sports, Innovators of the Future, and Future Engineers.
Therefore, the Kingdom carefully selected 15 teams of 30 students from various regions, as well as 11 advisers and 15 trainers.
Al-Jawhara Al-Qahtani and Aseel Al-Jasser said that their success was basically due to multiple months of work at a camp at Tuwaiq Academy.
In order to build the robot, both students employed artificial intelligence, machine learning, 3D printing, and sensors connected to camera as well as radar technologies.
It is worth mentioning that the current success represents a collaborative effort between the Saudi Ministry of Education, the Saudi Federation for Robotics & RC Sports, Tuwaiq Academy, and Tatweer Education Holding Co.
Arab Mathematics Olympiad 2024 in Qatar
In November, the Saudi national team secured the first place at the fourth edition of the Arab Mathematics Olympiad 2024 in Qatar, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The team won two gold and two silver medals in recognition for its promising success in the competition.
Youssef Bakheet from Yanbu and Muath Al-Qahtani from the Eastern Region secured two gold medals.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Al-Shehri from Riyadh and Ahmed Khalawi from Jeddah won two silver medals.
Crucially, this achievement crystalizes the efforts of the King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
In securing these medals, Saudi Arabia’s total medal count in the Olympiad surged to 11 medals over three participations.
International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA)
Saudi Arabia’s team achieved remarkable success in the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in August.
Saudi students successfully secured three medals in the first Saudi participation in the history of IOAA, with nearly 250 students from 50 countries.
The Kingdom’s participation represented a collaborative effort of King Abdulaziz and His Companions Foundation for Giftedness and Creativity (Mawhiba), the Communications, Space and Technology Commission, as well as the Ministry of Education.
During the Olympiad, the participants took two tests:
- Theoretical test to measure their knowledge and understanding of astronomy and astrophysics
- Practical test to observe astronomical objects and analyze data
The Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad is an annual international competition for high school students. Last year, the Kingdom participated with an observer team to prepare for this year’s competitions.
