Etihad Etisalat “Mobily” has signed a cooperation agreement with Telecom Egypt to launch the first Saudi submarine cable between the Kingdom and Egypt.
Enhancing Connectivity
Owned by Mobily, the new cable will pave the way for further expansion and connectivity with Europe through various options.
The new project will also enhance Mobily’s submarine cable systems and international infrastructure.
Therefore, it will provide more reliable connectivity aligning with the accelerating communication traffic and satisfying the increasing needs for local and international internet services.
Moreover, it will be deployed between two landing stations on the Red Sea, one in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, and the other in Duba, Saudi Arabia.
In the light of this, it will enable Mobily to link the Arabian Gulf and neighboring countries with the Egyptian Red Sea station via Mobily’s digital corridors.
Interestingly, the cable will provide connectivity to various existing submarine cable systems extending toward Egypt.
Significant Step
“The new cable represents a significant step in strengthening the Kingdom’s position as a leading international hub for communications and data traffic, aligning with the goals of the Saudi Vision 2030,” said Mobily CEO Salman Al-Badran.
He added that the deal emphasizes their commitment to expand infrastructure and local and international capabilities.
On his part, Eng. Mohamed Nasr, Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt, stated: “We are pleased to cooperate with Mobily. This agreement represents a milestone in the history of our bilateral cooperation to achieve ambitious plans and connect two major regional centers such as Egypt and the Kingdom.”
After constructing the new landing station in Sharm El-Sheikh, Telecom Egypt is currently developing new routes to connect Egypt to the Mediterranean Sea.
Concurrently, it supports several international efforts to develop the communications infrastructure and increase the geographical diversity of the submarine cable network.
