The Saudi Foreign Minister, Faisal bin Farhan, received a phone call from his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, and during the call they discussed the latest updates regarding the situation in Gaza. The two ministers also reviewed the recent escalation in the region and the importance of joint coordination and efforts not to aggravate the situation, reported Al Arabiya.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a previous statement, affirmed that Saudi Arabia calls on the Security Council to assume its responsibility and maintain international peace and security, especially in this region that is extremely sensitive to global peace and security. It also urged the Council to prevent the worsening of the crisis that would have dire consequences if it expands.
Iran launched an unprecedented direct attack against Israel on Saturday.
After a suspected Israeli strike on Iranian consular building in Syria on April 1, which killed seven Iranian officers including two senior commanders, Tehran vowed revenge, putting Israel and the US on high alert.
On Saturday morning, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) seized an Israeli-linked container ship, the Portuguese-flagged MSC Aries, near the Strait of Hormuz.
Later on Saturday, Iran launched more than 300 drones and missiles towards Israel in an immense aerial attack. After reports of the attack, Israel closed its airspace, and so did Jordan, Iraq and Lebanon. By Sunday morning, Israel and Jordan reopened their airspace.
In a warning to Israel, Bagheri said, “Our response will be much larger than tonight’s military action if Israel retaliates against Iran.”
