Saudi Arabia will launch the “West Qassim Airport” project in Ar Rass governorate Wednesday, reported Al Arabiya. It is considered a distinguished qualitative leap in the field of aviation; its various components and facilities, constitutes the nucleus of promising future aviation activities.
The West Qassim Airport project, which was established by the Ar Rass Chamber of Commerce, expands over an area estimated at 17.6 million square metres. It has a runway of 2.3 million square metres, and with a future expansion capacity of about 35% of its current size.
The airport will provide 11 diverse services, including commercial aviation. It will also contain a center that is the first of its kind for remote aircraft control, an advanced maintenance center and aircraft hangars. In addition, it established an academy specializing in aviation sciences, a rural inn, and a recreational area. It will also host 4 annual festivals specialized in aviation.
The airport project was initially an idea from the Emir of Al-Qassim in 2019, Fayez Al-Shuaili, Chairman of the Ar Rass Chamber of Commerce said. The Ar Rass Chamber adopted the project and began construction work in mid-2020 as part of its important role in serving the governorate, the business sector, and the people.
Airports in Saudi Arabia broke an unprecedented record as the number of travelers reached 112 million in 2023, reported Al Arabiya. This number grew by 26% compared to 2022 and by 8% compared to 2019, affirming that the Kingdom’s air transport sector recovered from the repercussion covid-19 pandemic.
The number of flights through the Kingdom’s airports reached about 815 thousand flights in 2023, an increase of 16% compared to 2022, according to the air traffic performance report issued by the General Authority of Civil Aviation.
The Kingdom witnessed record growth in terms of the number of passengers and international flights during the past year, reaching about 61 million passengers. The number of flights reached more than 394 thousand flights.
