Saudi Arabia to Host First Chinese Contemporary Art Exhibition

The Saudi Museums Commission is gearing up to launch “The Writings of Today Are a Promise for Tomorrow,” the first exhibition of Chinese contemporary art in Saudi Arabia, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Set to be held at the Saudi Arabian Museum of Contemporary Art at Jax in Diriyah, the exhibition will showcase over 50 artworks by more than 30 Chinese artists.

The artworks will highlight the transformative nature of contemporary society and explore a vast array of cultural and societal themes, emphasizing the significance of writing in both Arabic and Chinese traditions.

The exhibition’s main themes revolve around the role of the garden in Chinese culture and a deep exploration of commodification and capital in contemporary Chinese society.

“Visitors will encounter a wide range of works across different mediums, presenting a non-traditional view of Chinese contemporary art. The exhibition highlights universal themes of memory, nostalgia, progress and modernism, while exploring the balance between individual and collective identity,” Ibrahim Al-Sanousi, acting CEO of the Museums Commission, said.

Interestingly, the exhibition sheds light on several works from an important period in Chinese contemporary art, from the late 90s to early 2000s.

“The curatorial narrative draws on the shared cultural values of calligraphy and gardens in both Arab and Chinese traditions, with the Literati Garden as a central theme, inviting visitors to slow down and fully immerse themselves in the experience,” Al-Sanousi told Arab News.

Set to run from the end of September to January, the event will provide visitors with a valuable platform to engage with large sculptures, immersive installations, videos, paintings and photography with an obvious perspective on Chinese contemporary art.
