Saudi Arabia Takes Part in 14th Meeting of UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Info

Saudi Arabia took part in the 14th meeting of the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management, held at the UN headquarters in New York from August 5 to 7, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Represented by the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information (GEOSA), the meeting tackled the ways of supporting the future geospatial information environment.

The Saudi delegation was represented by GEOSA President Dr. Eng. Mohammed bin Yahya Al Sayel who expressed the Kingdom’s welcome to host the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Center (THE ECOSYSTEM) in Riyadh.

“Saudi Arabia also welcomes the UN report that includes boosting arrangements for global geospatial information management,” Al Sayel said.

Currently, the Kingdom is striving to complete all necessary preparations to host (THE ECOSYSTEM) with a unique vision to foster research in the geospatial information ecosystem in collaboration with the United Nations Committee of Experts on Geospatial Information Management and other concerned parties.

Special Thanks to Mexico

Al Sayel expressed the Kingdom’s gratitude and appreciation to Mexico for its efforts in hosting the Seventh High-Level Forum on Geospatial Information Management, which will be held in Mexico City in October 2024. In the same context, he underscored the Kingdom’s unwavering support for the General Secretariat of the United Nations Committee of Experts to ensure its continuous success and accomplishments.

The three-day meeting has delved into the following topics:

  • Strengthening global arrangements for managing geospatial information
  • Boosting the future of geospatial information environment
  • Following up on the contributions of regional committees and thematic networks
  • Promoting the use of geospatial information to achieve sustainable development goals
  • Achieving integration between geospatial information, statistical information and other relevant information
  • Employing the use of integrated geospatial information in effective land management and organization
  • Activating the use of integrated marine geospatial information
  • Emphasizing the role of policy and legal frameworks including reference data
  • Enhancing cooperation with the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names
