The Communications, Space, and Technology Commission (CST) and the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organisation (SASO) have announced the first phase of mandatory USB-C charging ports for mobile phones and electronic devices in Saudi Arabia. This requirement will take effect on January 1, 2025.
Goals of the Unified Charging Port Decision
CST and SASO confirmed that the decision aims to enhance user experience, reduce consumer costs, and promote higher-quality charging and data transfer technology. Additionally, it will improve the overall quality of tech products in the market.
Impact on Environmental Sustainability
The unified charging port initiative also seeks to promote environmental sustainability. It will help reduce electronic waste and lower the local demand for charging ports by more than 2.2 million units annually.
Consumer Savings and Waste Reduction
The decision is expected to save Saudi consumers more than SAR 170 million ($45 million) per year. Moreover, it will contribute to the Kingdom’s sustainability goals by cutting down electronic waste by approximately 15 tons annually.
Devices Affected in the First Phase
The first phase of this initiative will include the following devices:
- Mobile phones
- Tablets
- Digital cameras
- E-readers
- Portable video game consoles
- Headphones and earphones
- Portable speakers
- Amplified speakers
- Keyboards and mice
- Portable navigation systems
- Wireless routers
Second Phase for Laptops
The second phase, set to begin on April 1, 2026, will mandate USB-C charging ports for laptops.
Implementation Timeline
The phased implementation of this regulation was announced on August 6, 2023. It requires companies and suppliers to adopt USB Type-C as the standard charging port for new devices, adhering to the technical and administrative requirements outlined by the relevant technical regulations.
