Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification has launched a new project to study and assess degraded sites in the Kingdom’s western and southern regions.
Through the use of state-of-the-art technologies, the project will concentrate on creating rehabilitation plans in line with global standards, according to Arab News.
As part of a wider national strategy, the initiative seeks to identify degraded areas and delve into direct and indirect causes in Makkah, Madinah, Baha, Asir, Jazan, as well as Najran.
Moreover, the project will highlight short-, medium-, and long-term plans to restore degraded lands using internationally recognized strategies.
The center also added that they will prepare specified plans to monitor and evaluate land degradation, taking into consideration the local conditions and national priorities.
In order to determine degradation severity, the center will carry out in-depth assessments with remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems.
Apart from this, the project also includes extensive field and lab analyses of soil, vegetation and water, as well as economic and social evaluations.
To prioritize restoration needs, the project will develop practical methodologies and mechanisms to guide rehabilitation efforts.
