Saudi Arabia Joins UNESCO World Heritage Committee Session in India

Saudi Arabia is participating in the 46th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in India, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The Saudi National Committee for Education, Culture and Science and the Kingdom’s permanent delegation to UNESCO and the Heritage Commission are representing the Kingdom in the meeting, which is running from July 21 to July 31 in New Delhi, India, with the presence of 195 member states which ratified the World Heritage Convention of 1972.

The advisor to the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, Eng. Mohammed bin Youssef Al-Aidaroos, leads the Kingdom’s delegation, which participated in several events during the session.

During these events, the Kingdom’s representatives delivered speeches that highlighted Saudi Arabia’s support and contributions to UNESCO in its efforts to preserve world heritage.

The events included the Digital Heritage Platform, Capacity Building in African Countries, the Islamic World Heritage event, held by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (ICESCO).

The Digital Heritage Platform, supported by Saudi Arabia and the UNESCO, is an online platform that harnesses the latest cutting-edge technologies to allow users to explore UNESCO’s cultural and natural world heritage sites, in addition to intangible cultural heritage.

During the current session, the World Heritage Committee will review a proposal on enlisting 27 new sites from around the world on the UNESCO World Heritage list. It will also consider the preservation status of 124 sites on the list, including 56 sites on the List of World Heritage in Danger.

The World Heritage Committee is responsible for supervising the implementation of the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. It consists of 21 representatives elected by the 195 member states.
