Saudi Arabia Discovers Remains of Marine Creatures 56 Million Years Old

The Saudi Geological Survey announced the discovery of Marine Creatures remains dating back over 56 million years to the Early Eocene epoch. These remains were found in limestone layers of the Ar-Rass sedimentary formation in the Northern Border region of Saudi Arabia.

The official spokesperson for the Saudi Geological Survey stated that these fossils, which include bony fish, are the first of their kind in the Kingdom from this geological period. He also explained that the fossils have been attributed to extinct catfish (Siluriformes), which are of great significance in understanding the environment of the Early Eocene epoch from an ancient geographical and ecological perspective.

This unique discovery adds to the numerous fossil findings, including mammals in the Nafud region, the Hijaz monkey, as well as the discovery of parts of the remains of a whale that went extinct 37 million years ago, found in the limestone formation of Al-Rashrashiyah in Al-Qurayyat, located in the Al-Jawf region (northern Saudi Arabia).

These fossils can be displayed in geological museums through a partnership between the Geological Survey Authority and the Ministry of Tourism. This collaboration could create a single museum showcasing fossils and providing an overview of Saudi Arabia’s geology. It would also feature the country’s diverse stones, blending scientific value with investment potential, especially as exploration and research into Earth’s hidden treasures continue to grow.
