Saudi Arabia Celebrates World Maritime Day 2024 with Parade, Marine Activities

Saudi Arabia has celebrated World Maritime Day 2024 with several parade activities and marine events, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Represented by the Transport General Authority (TGA), Saudi Arabia holds prestigious celebration each year to highlight the maritime sector’s pivotal role in achieving food security and supporting commercial, industrial and economic sectors.

TGA has lighted up landmarks, buildings and towers in some Saudi cities with blue to express pride and gratitude to more than 2,000 Saudi sailors.

The celebrations also crystalized the majesty of the Saudi naval fleet, which boasts 420 ships flying the Saudi flag, and the Kingdom’s role in preserving international maritime traffic and safety.

Themed “Navigating the future: safety first!” the 2024 World Maritime Day highlighted the significance of safety at sea in an era of remarkable transformations and new risks.

This year’s theme has tackled the importance of implementing safety standards and requirements in maritime navigation in accordance with the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), the world’s most important treaty for the safety of merchant ships.

“2024 marks 50 years since the SOLAS treaty was adopted. We can be proud of the crucial role this convention has played in setting international safety standards for ship construction, equipment, and operation, preventing maritime disasters and protecting lives. But we cannot be complacent. World Maritime Day calls for collective effort to ensure we keep pace with the ongoing transformation in shipping,” Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez said.
