Saudi Arabia Braces for Coldest Winter Spell

Saudi Arabia is to experience its coldest winter spell this season, starting from Monday, according to the National Centre for Meteorology (NCM). The NCM forecasts cold conditions at night and in the early morning hours across the northern regions and the southwestern highlands from today until 17 January. Residents can expect fog and frost in parts of these areas.

Moreover, rainfall is expected towards the end of this week in parts of Tabuk, Al Jouf, the Northern Borders, Hail, Makkah, and Madinah regions. These conditions may be accompanied by a further drop in temperatures and increased cloud cover.

The NCM also warned that surface winds could stir up dust and sand during the daytime in parts of Tabuk, Al Jouf, the Northern Borders, Hail, Makkah, and Madinah. These effects may extend to the Qassim, Riyadh, and Eastern Province regions. Consequently, this could lead to reduced horizontal visibility.

Preparations and Safety Measures

Moreover, the Ministry of Municipalities and Housing is closely monitoring weather reports issued by the NCM. Furthermore, the ministry has elevated its preparedness levels to respond to any potential rainfall and weather fluctuations. It is working in direct coordination with regional municipalities to continuously update operational plans, reinforce the presence of field teams and operations rooms, and ensure rapid responses to water accumulation. The ministry is also maintaining smooth traffic flow on roads and municipal facilities.

In addition, affiliated entities are carrying out preventive maintenance to enhance the efficiency of field teams and ensure the continuity of municipal services under varying weather conditions. As part of preparations for the mid-year school holiday, efforts have been integrated with municipalities to enhance a safe urban environment. This will allow families and visitors to enjoy parks, promenades, and public facilities while maintaining continuous field monitoring to ensure site readiness.

Public Advisory

The NCM urged citizens and residents to take necessary precautions and to closely follow weather updates and warnings, particularly in areas expected to face the bad weather. The ministry also stressed the importance of monitoring daily reports through the NCM’s official website and verified social media channels, advising the public to follow alerts issued through official channels and comply with safety guidance.

The ministry will continue to monitor weather developments and take necessary measures in coordination with relevant authorities.
