As summer temperatures soar across the Kingdom, Saudi Arabia is turning to its landscapes for relief.
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has placed afforestation at the core of its climate strategy, viewing trees not only as shade for cities, but as natural defenders that purify the air and refresh daily life.
With each sapling cultivated, the Kingdom broadens its environmental ambitions, weaving greenery into the fabric of the daily life.
Why Are Trees Nature’s Best Cooling System?
Saudi Arabia’s push for afforestation reflects a broader commitment to enhancing regional transformation. At its 20th executive committee meeting, the Middle East Green Initiative underscored remarkable progress made toward its ambitious environmental targets, including planting 35.4 billion trees and rehabilitating 99.4 million hectares of degraded landscapes.
Further cementing these figures, the ministry noted that trees are not only offering welcome shade on hot summer days; they also play a pivotal role in alleviating urban temperatures.
Trees reduce heat by blocking direct sunlight from reaching roads, sidewalks, and other paved surfaces. Furthermore, they cool the atmosphere through transpiration, releasing water vapor from their leaves, promoting air quality in parks, neighborhoods, and public spaces.
More Than Just Green Spaces
Beyond their environmental benefits, trees also make a real difference in enhancing the quality of everyday life.
Large green spaces stand out as welcoming settings for recreation and outdoor activities, inviting residents to spend more time walking, exercising, and connecting with nature.
More notably, each tree can absorb an average of up to 150 kilograms of carbon dioxide annually, making afforestation a courageous ally in the fight against climate change.
Why Do Native Trees Matter Most?
To maximize the long-term benefits of afforestation to greater extent, the ministry encourages residents to plant native tree species that can be naturally adapted to the Kingdom’s climate.
Such species requires less water and thrives in local conditions, having an amazing opportunity for promoting more efficient use of natural resources and reinforcing the sustainability of greening initiatives.
The ministry also underscored the importance of proper care during the summer months to help trees withstand extreme heat and continue to thrive.
In many ways, afforestation plays a central role in advancing the goals of the Saudi Vision 2030, while strengthening the Kingdom’s commitment to climate resilience and environmental sustainability.
