The Riyadh Metro has started receiving passengers on Sunday morning after launching operations across 3 lines out of the project’s six main lines, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

The 3 lines that have started operations are the Blue Line, the Yellow Line, and the Purple Line. The first line (Blue Line) connects Olaya Street to Al Batʼha. The fourth line (Yellow Line) runs along the King Khalid International Airport Road. Meanwhile, the sixth line (Purple Line) covers Abdul Rahman bin Awf Road and Al-Shaikh Hassan Bin Hussain Road.

The remaining three lines will come into operation consecutively according to the announced schedule. Thus, the second line (Red Line), covering King Abdullah Road, and the fifth line (Green Line), covering King Abdulaziz Road, will start operating on December 15, 2024.

On January 5, 2025, the third line (Orange Line), covering Madinah Road, will begin receiving passengers, marking the full activation of the Riyadh Metro six main lines.

Passengers can plan their trips and buy tickets via Darb App, provided by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) for smartphone users, or directly from metro stations.

On November 27, 2024, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, officially inaugurated the Riyadh Metro project, one of the largest transportation networks in the world. The Riyadh Metro project consists of an extensive network of 6 main lines, spanning 176 kilometers and connecting 85 stations.

The mega project is expected to transport up to 1.2 million passengers daily in its initial phase, reaching its full capacity of 3.6 million passengers daily once the Riyadh Metro becomes fully operational. The project is a major stride towards reducing traffic congestion in the capital city, creating a more sustainable landscape and improving the citizens’ quality of life.
