Riyadh Action Agenda: Saudi Arabia Leads Fight against Environmental Decline

Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step towards addressing global land degradation, drought, and desertification by launching the Riyadh Action Agenda. The initiative was unveiled during the UNCCD COP16 conference in Riyadh. Dr. Osama Faqeeha, Deputy Minister for Environment, emphasized the agenda’s focus on uniting stakeholders to drive tangible action.

Faqeeha stated, “Mobilizing and incentivizing efforts beyond COP16 ensures Saudi Arabia’s leadership in land restoration creates a lasting global impact.” The agenda, unveiled on Agri-Food System Day, aligns with Saudi Arabia’s two-year presidency of COP16.

Focus on Sustainable Agriculture

Agriculture contributes to 23% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 80% of deforestation, according to UNCCD reports. Agri-Food System Day discussions highlighted soil health, resilient crops, and private sector participation in transforming food systems.

Faqeeha noted, “Ninety-five percent of food depends on soil, yet unsustainable practices cause significant annual soil loss, worsening global food security.” Experts predict global crop yields may drop by 10% by 2050, with regions hardest hit seeing up to a 50% decline.

Driving Immediate Solutions

The agenda calls for reinvesting harmful agricultural subsidies to fund land restoration and sustainable practices. Faqeeha added, “Urgent solutions do not require reinventing the wheel; redirecting subsidies could deliver immediate, impactful results.”

The Riyadh Action Agenda seeks to foster collaboration among farmers, indigenous peoples, and private sectors. The initiative reflects Saudi Arabia’s commitment to leading global efforts in land preservation and sustainable agriculture.
