Moroccans Protest against Maersk Vessel Reportedly Carrying Weapons to Israel

More than 1,000 Moroccans gathered in the Moroccan port city of Tangier on Sunday and protested against the arrival of a ship believed to be carrying parts for F-35 fighter jets to Israel, according to Arab News.

Wide Protests

Port workers in Casablanca, labor unions and pro-Palestinian organizations stated that the Maersk vessel was transporting US weapons to Israel to support the occupation in its genocide in Gaza.

On Sunday, people were waving Palestinian flags, wearing traditional keffiyehs and chanting “The people want the ship banned,” and “No genocidal weapons in Moroccan waters,” according to AFP.

Despite media inquiries, Maersk and port authorities did not release any official statements or comments on the incident.

The Danish company has previously announced that it did not transport weapons or ammunition to conflict zones.

However, it holds a contract with the US government and has recently admitted handling cargo that “contain military-related equipment” derived from “US-Israeli security cooperation.”

Ending Israeli-Moroccan Relations

During the rally, demonstrators seized the opportunity and renewed their demand of cutting diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel, that have been normalized since 2010 under the US-led Abraham Accords.

Since the beginning of Gaza War in October 2023, Moroccans have been protesting and calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and an end to Morocco’s ties with Israel.

So far, the Israeli strikes have killed at least 50,021 Palestinians and wounded more than 115,338, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
