The Vatican has announced the demise of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, April 21, at the age of 88, at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta, according to BBC.
The pontiff’s death comes after a series of health worries in recent years and a long stay in hospital in February and March.
“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” said Cardinal Kevin Farrell in a statement released by the Vatican.
Francis was Bishop of Rome and Head of the Catholic Church since 2013.
“His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church,” the statement added.
On Sunday, just a day before passing away, the Pope greeted crowds in St Peter’s Square.
The process of selecting a new pope usually takes from 15 to 20 days after the demise of the late bishop.
