Pope Francis called for a Gaza ceasefire during his Easter Mass amid renewed health concerns. Addressing tens of thousands at St. Peter’s Square, the Pope condemned war as an “absurdity,” mentioning conflicts in Europe and the Middle East.
The Pope, facing health issues, has missed recent events or reduced his speaking engagements. However, on Easter Sunday, he delivered the “Urbi et Orbi” message in full, appearing cheerful as he smiled and waved to the crowd. Francis had canceled a Good Friday service last minute to preserve his health for the remaining weekend celebrations, as stated by the Vatican.
During Holy Week, the Pope led five liturgies, including a lengthy Easter Vigil in St. Peter’s Basilica. Despite recent hospitalization and health issues, including colds, flu, and bronchitis, he has shown determination to participate fully in the intense period of Holy Week and Easter, sometimes relying on aides to read speeches on his behalf.
The Pope reiterated his call for an immediate ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict and urged for humanitarian aid access to Gaza and the prompt release of hostages.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, the pontiff called for a “general exchange of prisoners” and urged world leaders to prevent the escalation of conflict. He also expressed concern for children affected by war, noting that many have “forgotten how to smile.”
