Lufthansa said that several staff members suffered injuries on Thursday after the nose landing gear of a Boeing 787 jetliner collapsed suddenly at a gate at Frankfurt Airport, according to Reuters.
A company spokesperson said in an emailed statement that “passengers had not yet boarded” the aircraft, noting that that crew members and ground staff were on board the aircraft at the time of the incident.
“Several staff members were injured and are currently receiving medical treatment,” the company added.
A Reuters photographer also reported seeing various emergency vehicles surrounding the twin-engine widebody aircraft, which rest partly on its belly.
Lufthansa said the incident took place at 12:45 p.m. (1045 GMT), with the jet set to operate flight LH450 to Los Angeles.
Currently, the company is investigating the exact circumstances with the relevant authorities.
Notably, the Boeing 787, including the 787-9 variant operated by Lufthansa, is a relatively recent addition to the airline group’s fleet.
This addition is part of the group’s efforts to advance plans of phasing out less efficient jets and simplifying its fleet operations.
