KFSHRC Performs Middle East’s First Robotic Pancreas Transplant

King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) has performed the first robotic pancreas transplantation in the Middle East, reported the Saudi Press Agency.

The operation has put an end to the suffering of a young man with type 1 diabetes, according to a KFSHRC press release.

In addition, it ended the patient’s dependency on insulin and emphasized the power of medical innovation to improve patients’ quality of life.

Basically, the young man suffered from type 1 diabetes, accompanied by severe complications, such as kidney failure. Therefore, he underwent a successful kidney transplant at KFSHRC. However, he was facing some challenges concerning the diabetes and its complications, which were unresponsive to conventional treatments.

Hence, the pancreas transplantation became the most appropriate option to end his suffering and provide him with a better quality of life.

Through robotic technologies, the medical team has successfully transplanted the pancreas into the recipient without direct human intervention.

KFSHRC has recently strengthened its position as a prestigious global reference in robotic surgery.

This year, the center performed the world’s first fully robotic heart transplant. Furthermore, it conducted the world’s first-ever fully robotic liver transplant in 2023.
