Riyadh is gearing up to turn its attention to the skies as the future of space connectivity and sustainable satellite networks takes center stage in the Saudi capital.

Riyadh turns its eyes to the skies

From October 12–14, the Saudi Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), in collaboration with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), will host the Global Space Connectivity & Sustainability Events under the patronage of Minister of Communications and Information Technology and CST Chairman Abdullah Alswaha.

The gathering will feature the third editions of the Connecting the World from the Skies Forum and the Space Sustainability Forum (SSF), placing the future of satellite connectivity, space technologies and responsible use of orbit at the heart of discussions.

How will space shape the next economy?

Notably, the event will bring together regulators, companies, researchers and specialists from the telecommunications and space sectors to examine how satellite connectivity is evolving and what it could mean for the future of global networks.

In this sense, the discussions will involve the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks for the 6G era, preparations for WRC-27 and the potential of direct-to-device connectivity.

More broadly, the agenda will also highlight the rapidly growing space economy, emerging markets and the pivotal role of space as critical infrastructure, as well as the ways space-based technologies can contribute to sustainability on Earth.

However, the sector faces a growing set of challenges since more activity moves into orbit.

Addressing these threats, experts will examine global governance and responsible behavior in space, while exploring the need to manage congestion, mitigate interference and prevent the accumulation of space debris.

Spotlight on space research

The event will also turn the spotlight on research, unveiling the winners of the Non-Terrestrial Networks International Research Competition 2026, organized by the CST in partnership with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

For researchers, specialists and industry stakeholders, the gathering will serve as more than a forum for discussion, creating multiple opportunities to exchange expertise and sign partnerships across the interconnected fields of telecommunications, space and sustainability.
