Saudi Arabia to Establish Specialized Animal Research Facility in Riyadh

Saudi Arabia’s bold ambitions in biomedical research are taking shape not only through promising discoveries and strategic partnerships, but through the state-of-the-art laboratories needed to make those advances possible.

Inside Saudi Arabia’s research expansion

The King Abdullah International Medical Research Center plans to establish a specialized laboratory animal facility in Riyadh and a biosafety level 3 laboratory to support advanced biomedical and biotechnology research, according to Al Arabiya.

The expansion is expected to provide researchers with greater capacity to conduct advanced preclinical research.

Mohammed Al-Tokhais, research director at the center’s partnerships and collaborations department, said the center seeks to bring its laboratory animal facility in line with advanced international standards.

Designed to support experiments involving small and medium-sized animals, the facility will also equip researchers with the infrastructure and technology needed to advance biotechnology research.

What does advanced research infrastructure mean?

Remarkably, the biosafety level 3 laboratory aims to expand the scope of research the center can undertake, enabling scientists to study certain infectious agents in tightly controlled environments, Al-Tokhais said.

At the same time, the Kingdom’s ambitions extend beyond building specialized facilities. Through its partnerships, the center also seeks to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technologies to the Kingdom, build national capabilities and lay the groundwork for new research and scientific discoveries.

More boldly, the center’s partnerships are also poised to build expertise alongside infrastructure. Under some agreements, Saudi researchers and physicians receive training abroad in advanced techniques that are not yet available in the Kingdom.

Once they return, participants can apply those skills through local research, helping transfer and localize these technologies, Al-Tokhais said.

A growing biomedical research network

The planned facility will add to a growing research infrastructure that already spans several of the Kingdom’s leading universities and medical institutions.

At KAUST, the Animal Resources Core Laboratory stands out as a dedicated environment for biomedical research involving mice. Its specific pathogen-free facility holds AAALAC International accreditation and follows internationally recognized animal-welfare standards. Meanwhile, its capabilities include advanced imaging, irradiation and behavioral-assessment technologies.

The foundations for this research ecosystem have been developing for decades. King Saud University’s Experimental Surgery and Laboratory Animal Centre, established in 1987, features dedicated animal units, controlled housing and specialized isolation rooms for ethically conducted research.

In Riyadh, King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre has likewise developed laboratory animal services that provide husbandry and veterinary care for research animals, including rodents and non-human primates.

The growing network signals a broader shift in Saudi Arabia’s research landscape, with specialized infrastructure increasingly fueling the Kingdom’s ambitions in biomedical science and biotechnology.
