India reported the deaths of five Air Force personnel on Saturday after a military aircraft crashed during landing at a base in the remote northeastern part of the country, according to Arab News.
In a statement, the Indian Air Force “deeply regrets the loss of five personnel in the An-32 crash at Jorhat,” a city in the northeastern state of Assam. The statement did not provide details on the total number of people on board and gave no immediate information on possible survivors.
Speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, an air force official stated that the co-pilot survived the crash.
NDTV broadcast footage from the crash site showed thick black smoke plume with the aircraft seeming to have broken into pieces.

The air force extended its “deepest condolences to the bereaved families” and said it stands firmly with them “in this hour of grief.”
Interestingly, the air force said earlier that the Russian-made Antonov An-32 was on a “routine sortie” when it crashed while approaching landing.
As a twin-engine turboprop aircraft, the An-32 is built for high-altitude operations and extreme climates.
The authorities have constituted a court of inquiry to ascertain the cause of the accident.
