Four American crew members died when their refueling plane crashed in western Iraq during a combat mission on Thursday afternoon. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed the fatalities but emphasized that hostile fire did not cause the initial mid-air incident. Meanwhile, a second damaged aircraft managed to land safely at Ben Gurion airport in Israel despite losing its tail fin.
The crash occurred around 19:00 GMT on Thursday while the aircraft participated in ongoing operations within a volatile region. Central Command officials stated that investigators are currently examining the specific circumstances that led to this deadly aviation disaster today. Although officials deny enemy involvement, an Iranian proxy group claimed they targeted the plane during its flight over western Iraq.
Damage to the Second Aircraft
Israeli media outlets recently published photographs showing the second KC-135 jet sitting on the tarmac with significant structural damage. These images clearly reveal a missing section of the tail fin, which identifies the plane as part of California’s 940th Wing. The Boeing-manufactured KC-135 typically requires a pilot, a co-pilot, and a boom operator to manage the complex refueling process.
Gen. Dan Caine, chair of the US Joint Chiefs, spoke during a news conference regarding the status of the site. “We’re still treating this as an active rescue and recovery operation,” Caine told reporters while addressing the tragic loss.
Rising Tensions and Regional Conflict
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth honored the fallen personnel, describing the crew members as true “American heroes” for their service. “Their sacrifice will only recommit us to the resolve of this mission,” Hegseth added during his official press statement. Consequently, this incident brings the official U.S. military death toll to eleven since the regional conflict began two weeks ago.
The US military has now lost four aircraft during this war, including three F-15s previously downed over Kuwait this month. While American forces manage these losses, Israel’s military launched a fresh wave of strikes targeting Iranian infrastructure across the capital. Additionally, French officials confirmed a drone strike killed a French soldier at a Kurdish military base in northern Iraq on Thursday.
