Syria’s Interior Ministry announced on Friday that it had responded to the discovery of a mass grave in Sednaya in collaboration with the National Commission for Missing Persons (NCMP), according to Arab News.
Preliminary data indicates that the newly discovered grave contains the remains of opposition fighters killed during the 2014 battles in western Qalamoun against militias affiliated with the former regime.
The ministry noted that the internal security forces have secured the site by establishing a protective cordon to safeguard the location and maintain the integrity of evidence. Moreover, the area will remain secured until the ministry finalizes all legal procedures.
Currently, specialized teams are carrying out documentation procedures and collecting evidence to support further search and investigative operations.
In this regard, the ministry affirmed its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the dignity of the victims and advancing efforts to uncover the full truth behind the case.
It also extended its condolences to the families of the “martyrs”, stressing that identifying the fate of the victims, safeguarding their rights and ensuring accountability for those responsible remain both a national obligation and a moral duty.
In recent months, Syrian authorities have uncovered mass graves in several parts of the country containing the remains of hundreds of people allegedly killed during the deposed regime.
