In Photos: Meet Winners of King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award
The closing ceremony of the 1st edition of the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award has just announced the winning projects in the three categories, “Built Projects”, “Unbuilt Projects” and “Student Projects.”
The Award is a promising initiative designed basically to celebrate the extraordinary architectural marvels in accordance with the values of the King Salman Charter in Saudi Arabia.
Launched to glory King Salman’s vision, the Award boosts and stimulates cutting-edge and creative designs and encourages architects and designers to integrate the Charter’s principles into their work.
Built Projects
The “Built Projects” track targets the distinctive urban environment that has been already designed, implemented and operated.
Participants
11 projects were nominated for the first track, including:
- The Social Development Bank headquarters in Riyadh
- Najdara Resort
- Al Muqarnas Tower
- The Riyadh Conference Center
- Al Ghara Mosque in Medina
- The SABIC building in Jubail
- The King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) in Dhahran

- Dar Al Rahmaniya building in Al Ghat

Winners
1-King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra)
King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture (Ithra) has secured the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award for “Built Projects.
Designed by Snøhetta, the project represents a bold new initiative from the Saudi Aramco to promote cultural development within the Kingdom.
Located in Dhahran, the center will become a prestigious cultural destination boasting various cultural facilities, including an auditorium, cinema, library, exhibition hall, museum, and archive.
2-Banyan Tree AlUla Resort
With a stunning design prioritizing the preservation of natural beauty and the rich heritage of AlUla, Banyan Tree AlUla Resort has secured the Award.
The project boasts sustainable tent-like structures to protect the AlUla desert in accordance with the Strategic Master planning Guidelines for Alula and the Saudi Vision 2030.
3-Dar Al Rahmaniah Building in Al Ghat
Designed by John Lingley, Dar Al Rahmaniah Building in Al Ghat has won the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award for “Built Projects.
4-King Abdullah Financial District Grand Mosque
Designed by Omrania, King Abdullah Financial District Grand Mosque has obtained the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award in recognition of its fascinating design.
5-Innovation Tower – King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology
The Innovation Tower in King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology was designed by LAVA Laboratory of Visionary Architecture and crowned by the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award.
Unbuilt Projects
The second category includes designs for incomplete architectural works.

The track marked the participation of four projects:
- Abha International Airport
- Ratal Mosque in Dammam
- Sports Boulevard
- Mihrab in Medina
Winners
1-Mihrab
“Mihrab” secured the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award for “Unbuilt Projects,” under the supervision of the Madinah Region Development Authority.
2-Sports Boulevard
The second awarded project is “Sports Boulevard,” under the supervision of the Sports Boulevard Foundation and the Royal Commission for Riyadh City.
Student Projects
The third track is dedicated for brilliant university student and contained 8 projects from various universities across the Kingdom.
Winners
1-King Salman Global Academy for the Arabic Language
The project was designed by Abdulaziz Bin Ghanem Al-Talib from King Saud University.
2-Contemporary Neighborhood Design
Contemporary Neighborhood Design by Sadeem Aljibreen from the University of Sheffield has won the King Salman Charter for Architecture and Urbanism Award for “Student Projects.”
