King Saud University, represented by the Department of Geography, organized a scientific event in cooperation with the Saudi Geographical Society on the occasion of International Geographic Information Systems Day (GISday 2024), in the Hamad Al-Jasser Hall at the university center.
The event, which has been held annually since 2011, takes place at the university to celebrate Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and its various technologies and applications. These modern technologies help analyze data related to locations and geographical areas, assisting in the design and production of maps and solving natural and human-related problems concerning space.
Geospatial Technology Fields
The program featured scientific sessions with research papers on various GIS and geospatial technology fields. It also included specialized workshops and an exhibition in the university’s atrium, with participation from government and private sector entities, both locally and internationally.
Dr. Mufarrah bin Dhaim Al-Quradi, head of the Department of Geography, explained that this celebration is part of a major international event organized by academic institutions worldwide. This year, the committee has arranged several activities, including a competition for the best scientific poster to encourage student involvement. He also emphasized the strong participation of both male and female students.
On his part, the President of the Saudi Geographical Society, Dr. Ali Al-Dosari, confirmed that the society is keen to participate and contribute to this event every year due to its noble objectives that serve the nation’s interests. It is considered one of the most important scientific gatherings for specialists in geospatial sciences across various disciplines. Through this event, the community is introduced to the significance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), which studies locations and their various characteristics, helping to solve various problems and provide solutions in a modern digital way.
