The former US President and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Jimmy Carter, died on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at age 100, the Carter Center announced.
Carter was the 39th President of the US, serving from 1977 to 1981. His tenure saw economic and diplomatic crises, including an economic recession and the Iran hostage crisis, according to Reuters.
Moreover, Carter, a Democrat, brokered the peace deal between Egypt and Israel in 1978, which brought a level of stability to the Middle East. In 2002, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his “untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
In his final moments, Carter was surrounded by his family at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he died peacefully. The US and the world reacted to his death. The US President, Joe Biden, declared that January 9 will be “a national day of mourning throughout the United States for Carter,” according to a White House statement.
Biden said: “I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter.”
The President-elect Donald Trump posted on social media: “The challenges Jimmy faced as president came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.”
The Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, also paid tribute to the late US president. “His significant role in achieving the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel will remain etched in the annals of history,” he wrote on X.
