Moroccan authorities announced on Monday that the death toll rose to 18 people due to severe torrential rains in Morocco’s southern provinces of Tata, Tiznit, and Errachidia.
The dead include three foreign nationals from Spain, Canada and Peru, according to Reuters.
The rains have caused several material damages including the collapse of approximately 56 homes and 110 roads. The heavy floods also affected the local infrastructure such as electricity, drinking water and telephone communications.
As a response to the crisis, the Ministry of Equipment and Water has mobilized almost 200 personnel along with 96 earthmoving machines to restore the traffic and repair damaged infrastructure in the affected areas.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Interior has urged all citizens and residents to be extremely cautious due to the ongoing unstable weather conditions.
The Spokesman for the Moroccan General Directorate of Meteorology, Lhoussaine Youabd, explained that the reason behind the floods is the extremely unstable tropical air mass that formed unstable and violent clouds and thus caused massive rainfall.
