Farasan Craftswomen have set a role model for women’s struggle to meet the needs of daily living since ancient times, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
These brilliant women have produced magnificent handicrafts and artistic works that were once a source of livelihood and have now become a major element of cultural and tourist festivals.
Farasan’s local marine environment provided women with an opportunity to transform seashells and snails into exquisite jewelry, ornaments, bags, and sculptures. These stunning artworks crystalize the unparalleled beauty of the Farasan coast.
Apart from this, they also use palm fronds and doum palm trees and weave them into practical items such as prayer rugs, fans, and baskets.
The intricate weaving of men’s skullcaps through needles and white thread represents one of the island’s most celebrated crafts.
“We, the craftswomen of Farasan, are dedicated to preserving our island’s heritage and maritime identity. We teach young girls the secrets of these crafts, ensuring their continuity for generations to come,” Fatima bint Othman Salah said.
In the light of this, Farasan Women are playing a pivotal role not only in sustaining traditional practices but also adding an aesthetic touch to them.
