UPDATED: Biden Withdraws from the Presidential Race after Mounting Pressure
US President Joe Biden announced on Sunday his withdrawal from the 2024 White House race after mounting pressure from many Democrats to end his re-election bid and make way for a new nominee, reported AFP.
The announcement came after a vast array of embarrassing mistakes that sparked various questions over his ability to defeat Donald Trump in the November election.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President. And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden wrote in a statement on X.
Biden expressed his pride in the accomplishments of the past three and a half years, mentioning the strength of the American economy and national democracy.

Furthermore, the President expressed his deep gratitude and appreciation to those who re-elected him and extended special thanks to Vice President Kamala Harris for her exceptional partnership in leading the country.
Biden stated that he will continue in his role as president and commander-in-chief until the end of his term in January 2025.
He said that he would speak to the nation later this week with more details about his decision.
