Al-Rahmah Gate: Historic Symbol of Mercy at Prophet’s Mosque

Al-Rahmah Gate, also known as the Gate of Mercy, is one of the notable historical entrances on the western side of the Prophet’s Mosque. Its origins date back to the first year of the Hijra, making it one of the earliest gates associated with the mosque’s history.

The gate was originally called the “Gate of Atika,” but its name later changed following a well-known incident from the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Historical accounts mention that during a period of drought, a companion entered through this gate and asked the Prophet to pray for rain. The prayer was answered, and rain fell continuously for seven days. When the rain became excessive, the same man returned through the same gate to ask the Prophet to pray for it to stop. After the prayer, the rainfall eased, bringing relief and balance to the community—an event that led to the gate being associated with “mercy.”

From an architectural perspective, Al-Rahmah Gate features a historic inscription on its facade, reflecting the careful attention given to the mosque across different historical periods. Although the Prophet’s Mosque has expanded over time and now contains nearly one hundred entrances due to successive renovations—particularly during modern Saudi expansions—this gate has been preserved with special care.

Today, Al-Rahmah Gate remains an important part of the mosque’s architectural and spiritual heritage, symbolizing both a memorable moment from early Islamic history and the ongoing commitment to protecting the sacred site while accommodating millions of visitors each year.
