Iran has warned of attempts by foreign adversaries, including the United States and Israel, to target Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and undermine the stability of the Islamic Republic, according to AFP.
Iran’s Intelligence Ministry revealed that “the enemy seeks to target the supreme leader, sometimes with assassination attempts, sometimes with hostile attacks.”
It was unclear if the ministry meant a specific incident as Iranian officials often claim foreign plots. However, threats against Khamenei’s life have been rare, especially before the 12-day war with Israel in June.
“Those who act in this direction, knowingly or unknowingly, are the infiltrating agents of the enemy,” Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib said.
In June, Israel launched strikes against Iran, targeting senior Iranian military officials, nuclear scientists and sites as well as residential areas.
The US became directly involved in the conflict between Israel and Iran on June 22 after launching airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan in an attempt to destroy its nuclear program.
After the outbreak of the war, Khamenei took shelter in a secret location and was not seen in public. Trump said that he knew “EXACTLY” where the Ayatollah had been sheltering and that he had personally prevented Israeli and US armed forces from targeting him.
In his first public statement since the announcement of the ceasefire, Khamenei said that the US intervention in the war was basically driven by its feeling “that if it did not intervene, the Zionist regime would be utterly destroyed.” However, the US had not achieved any gains from this war, he added.
