Iran No Longer Enriching Uranium, Says Foreign Minister

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi revealed on Sunday that Tehran is no longer enriching uranium at any site in the country, according to the Associated Press.

During a landmark conference themed “International Law Under Assault: Aggression and Self-Defense,” in Tehran, Araqchi stated that the government does not conduct any enrichment at the moment because the facilities have been damaged after Israeli and US attacks.

“There is no undeclared nuclear enrichment in Iran. All of our facilities are under the safeguards and monitoring” of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Araghchi said.

Strong Stance

When asked about what might lead Iran back to the negotiating table with Washington and others, Araghchi affirmed that Iran’s message on its nuclear program remains “clear.”

“Iran’s right for enrichment, for peaceful use of nuclear technology, including enrichment, is undeniable,” he added.

Interestingly, the conference shed light on papers by Iranian political analysts showing Tehran’s view of the 12-day war in June. The analysts focused on German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s comments in which he commended Israel for having done the “dirty work” in striking Tehran.

“We have this right, and we continue to exercise that, and we hope that the international community, including the United States, recognize our rights and understand that this is an inalienable right of Iran and we would never give up our rights,” Araqchi added.

Political, Economic Consequences

After the war, Iran finds itself in a difficult moment, with Israel destroying the country’s air defense systems. Moreover, the rising tensions over Iran’s nuclear program poses a threat of further airstrikes.

On September 28, the E3_ Britain, France, and Germany_ reimposed sanctions on Tehran after they claimed that Iran has violated a 2015 deal that aimed at halting it from developing a nuclear weapon.

The imposition of sanctions has critical consequences on Tehran where the economy already struggles with crippling sanctions reimposed since 2018 after Donald Trump withdrew from the pact during his first presidential term.
