Trump Open to Meeting Khamenei, Says Iran Agreed to Forgo Nuclear Weapons

US President Donald Trump has signaled openness to meet Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei, claiming that Tehran has agreed to abandon its ambitions to acquire a nuclear weapon.

In an interview with the New York Post’s “Pod Force One” podcast on Wednesday, Trump said that the Iranians have “already agreed they’re not going to have a nuclear weapon.”

Trump also added that Khamenei is involved in the talks to reach a deal with the US. “He’s involved, absolutely. … They say he is giving approval,” he said.

The US President said that he has not had “the privilege of meeting” Mojtaba Khamenei. “I’d like to meet him. We probably will meet at some point, depending on how it all works out,” Trump noted.

The new Iranian Supreme Leader has not appeared in public since succeeding his father, Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a US-Israeli strike on February 28, 2026. Mojtaba is thought to have suffered a serious injury in the strike, according to several news reports.

In testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Mojtaba Khamenei is “increasingly engaging” in the ongoing negotiations between Washington and Tehran.

“We haven’t seen him publicly. … I think there are indications out there that he is increasingly engaging at some level. Although all of his communications have been in writing and through intermediaries,” Rubio said.
