King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) has achieved a remarkable milestone through the localization of blue light-emitting diode (LED) technology, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
This blue LED is very crucial especially when it comes to the development of modern energy-efficient lighting applications.
Through this outstanding success, the National Laboratory has crystalized its ongoing efforts to establish a strong infrastructure to boost research and innovation.
Moreover, it stands as a testament to KACST’s Saudi Semiconductor Program’s efforts to train national talents in designing and manufacturing electronic chips.

Interestingly, the blue LED technology has revolutionized modern lighting sector through various promising solutions, as follows:
- Reducing energy consumption by up to 80%
- Increasing efficiency to 200 lumens per watt compared to traditional bulbs’ 16 lumens per watt
- Extending lifespan by 20 times compared to conventional technologies
- Reducing electronic waste and greenhouse gas emissions by more than 6 times

Therefore, the new technology represents a fundamental pillar in supporting global efforts aiming at combating climate change and fulfilling sustainable development goals in Saudi Arabia.
Through localizing this technology, KACST is fostering the Kingdom’s global competitiveness and accelerating the achievement of the Saudi Vision 2030 goals.
Furthermore, it is part of the Kingdom’s pursuit to diversify the national economy, advance non-oil sectors, and promote sustainable development.
