Gulf Cooperation Council Secretary-General Jasem Al-Budaiwi on Friday commended Lebanon’s move to broaden state authority across Beirut and confine the possession of weapons to official forces, according to Al Arabiya.
In an official statement, Al-Budaiwi said the Lebanese government’s directive assigning the army and security forces to “immediately enhance full state control over Beirut Governorate, and restrict weapons to legitimate forces only” represents a significant step.
He further described the move as “an important step toward consolidating the sovereignty of the Lebanese state and strengthening its legitimate institutions,” adding that it would help boost security and stability while ensuring the protection of both citizens and residents.
Al-Budaiwi also stressed the GCC’s longstanding support for Lebanon, underscoring the bloc’s unwavering commitment to the country’s sovereignty, security, stability, and territorial integrity.
He noted that these measures are in line with “the aspirations of the Lebanese people for security, stability, and development.”
